TWENTY ONE - REMEMBER ME?

Twenty One - Remember Me?

The Mage Tower—any Mage Tower wasn’t just happy, they were delighted when Kaden produced the wreckage of three flaming gnome wagons. Despite his warning, there was still one more explosion, and no one was even angry about it.

The mage who was beheaded would probably be angry when he was resurrected, and Kaden had no intention of being there when he was. Trade Tokens were worth less in different towns, but Kaden carried a full spectrum mana sample and four spell scrolls.

In truth he’d gotten a good deal for what was essentially, literally flaming garbage. The wands had gone with Sara and she hadn’t spoken of what they got. Trella came away with an alchemical guide, which she assured them was essential, despite not being in her kit.

Kaden wondered at times if the lack of success the Sisters had with Alchemy was due to the equipment. The ‘grind’ kit might work for constantly practicing but not for reasonably succeeding.

Eve came home with three recipes and a smile on her face, one that grew wider as Kaden shared the meat he’d gotten from [Field Harvest]ing Terror Birds. At lunch, he calmly handed out scrolls.

Trella raised an eyebrow. “[Purify Water!]” Not twenty seconds later, the scroll collapsed. “It’s just like [Create Water]. Now I can make second tier creations without going through a secondary flask. I mean, once I succeed at first tier.”

Eve gently broke the seal. “Scrolls are a deeply inefficient way to…it will be worth the time. I wasn’t aware [Create Salt] was a spell, but now I can use the space in my cooking kit for other spices.”

He looked to Sara, the real winner here. “Ranged. Option.”

Her eyes narrowed as she read the scroll. “Imbue Acidic Spit? No! I didn’t like it when you used it. It’s a terrible talent.”

“One that works on anything with a mouth.” He glanced to the nearest pseudopod. “Those things have mouths.”

Sara set to work studying the scroll.

His own was simpler. Cheaper, because there was no point, according to most people. He read the writing across the top. Personal Messenger Bird.

The colony at the Holding was always available, the birds so tame they came willingly if he held out his hand. But the description had caught his interest.

[Personal Messenger Bird]

Create a Mana Bird from your own Soul. This bird is persistent. If dispersed, it returns to your soul. You cannot dispatch Personal Bird to more than one subject at a time. Personal Bird will adapt its look and personality. You may reset these changes for a minor mana cost.

It sounded a lot like a summons, and a lot like a Beast. And a lot like something he wanted. Kaden focused on the scroll. With Mana unlocked, it didn’t fight him, instead absorbing. The skill didn’t have a level, instead functioning more like a talent.

But now he knew how to do it, and summoned a bird.

Fire erupted in his chest, and System warnings flashed.

ERROR: ENTITY CONSTRAINT REQUIRES SOUL BINDING.
